Exploiting the Potential of Web 2.0 and the Social Web Workshop

Welcome to the wiki for the "Exploiting the Potential of Web 2.0 and the Social Web" workshop. The workshop was held at Sir John Moore Foundation, Top Street, Appleby Magna, Leicestershire on Wednessday, 18 March 2009. Details of the event are available on the UKOLN Web site.

Participants at the workshop were invited to:

  • Register for WetPaint, which will enable you (and others) to see pages you have created and edited (although note that registration is optional).
  • Familiarise themselves with the Wiki using the Test page.
  • Introduce yourself to fellow participants, and describe what you hope to gain from the workshop and topics you would like to see covered.
  • Give a summary of the issues and topics you would like to see addressed at the workshop.
  • Use the Feedback page to provide feedback on the event.

Please note that this wiki is intended for use by the workshop participants only. Also note that as this is a public wiki, no guarantee can be made regarding the sustainability or integrity of the content.

Does anyone else find it scary that to register to use the Wetpaint network you have to declare your date of birth? OK, anyone can give a false date but why ask for it in such detail in the first place?
The casual giving away of bits of our personal data for no good reason - especially on social networking sites - seems plain crazy. Why not give me a tick box to declare to the owners that I am legally able to vote, have sex, drink in a pub and log on to their website?
My local junior school recently sought parents' permision to have our child's fingerprint taken so they could use it to withdraw books from the library. Jeez, did we say no, or did we say no?
Or am I just being an old fogie?
